The Board of Directors of Engine—a nonprofit that works with a community of thousands of high-tech, growth-oriented startups across the nation to support technology entrepreneurship—announced this week that it has appointed Kate Tummarello as the organization’s new Executive Director. Kate has been at Engine since 2017 and has served as Engine’s Policy Director since 2019, working on privacy, intermediary liability, and telecommunications issues.
“Kate has played a critical role in developing Engine’s priorities and growing the organization, and we are lucky to have her step into this leadership role,” said Julie Samuels, Engine Board Member and former Executive Director. “She knows the startup community and the political landscape, and we are excited to see the continued success of the organization under her leadership. It is a crucial time for smart policy that incentivizes economic growth across the country, and Engine has an important role to play in the relevant debates.”
Prior to joining Engine, Kate worked on surveillance reform issues at the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Before joining the advocacy community, Kate spent years as a technology policy reporter in D.C., including at Politico, The Hill, and Communications Daily. She is a graduate of Hamilton College.
“This is a critical moment in the technology policy debate, and Engine has a unique role in those conversations,” said Tummarello. “From political discourse to navigating the pandemic, technology companies and the policies that govern them are playing an increasing role in our lives. I'm excited to continue working at Engine to elevate the voices and policy concerns of the thousands of startups across the country.”
