ENGINE PRIVACY POLICY
YOUR PRIVACY IS IMPORTANT TO US
In this policy, “Engine” or “we” refers to Engine staff, board members, interns, volunteers, and consultants, all of whom are bound by law or contract to keep confidential information they receive as part of their assistance to Engine.
Information We Gather
We may gather your information in a variety of circumstances. For instance:
Campaign Pages
On some pages you can use our site to contact policymakers, for example your representative member of Congress to advocate for certain policy positions. We might ask for your name, your contact information such as your email address, and your address.
We might, in certain circumstances, use third-party websites and/or tools that allow you to directly contact policymakers or other third parties, or allow you to RSVP to events. We may directly point you to those tools or sites or embed them directly on our site. Engine is not responsible for, and does not have any control over, the privacy practices or the content of such third parties. We encourage users to read the privacy policies of any website visited via links from Engine’s website. We will try to let users know when an embedded tool comes from a third party.
Newsletter Signup
We might ask you, on this site, to sign up for our email newsletter. To do so, we ask that you provide your name and email address. We will only use your email address to send you Engine mailings.
We use a third-party service, mailchimp, to facilitate our mailing list. Thus, we must share your email address with mailchimp. You can read mailchimp’s privacy policy here. We will not share your email address with any other service unless required by law.
Support Pages
On some pages you can support Engine by making donations or purchasing merchandise. To facilitate fund transfers we use third-party payment services offered by Stripe. This service maintains a separate relationship with you in order to safeguard your financial information. You may review Stripe’s privacy policy here. This service will return some of your information to us, such as your name, your mailing address and phone number, and your email address.
We use this information to: send donation receipts for your tax records; and/or contact you via e-mail or telephone to request additional information required to complete your order. We do not share this information with outside parties except to the extent necessary to complete your order, or as required by law.
Website Cookies
When you access pages on the Engine website we send one or more cookies — a short string of characters — to your computer that uniquely identifies your browser. This identity is used to authenticate and authorize your access to services provided on the website. We will not share this identify information with third parties unless required by law.
We use the Google Analytics service, which will also place cookies in your browser. This service allows us to analyze the performance of the website and make improvements where needed. We will not share any individually identifiable information collected with third parties unless required by law. We may share, or publish, aggregate information (e.g. number of unique visitors in a given month) to funders, policy makers, and the public.
You may disallow cookies in your browser and still read our site anonymously.
RSS Feeds
We use Google’s FeedBurner service for publishing RSS feeds. This service embeds tracking images into the feeds and enables us to track how many individuals subscribe to each feed and how often feed item links are selected to access full articles on the Engine site. We will not share any individually identifiable information collected with third parties unless required by law. We may share, or publish, aggregate information (e.g. number of unique visitors in a given month) to funders, policy makers, and the public.
You may disallow image loading in your RSS feed reader and still view our posts anonymously.
Log Files
Our web server generates a log entry for each item requested. Logs are reviewed daily to detect problems with the site (e.g. broken links) and vulnerability scans. Reports are generated weekly to quantify requests to resources that aren’t trackable by Google Analytics (e.g., PDF documents, audio files, and video files.) We will not share any individually identifiable information collected with third parties unless required by law. We may share, or publish, aggregate information (e.g. number of unique visitors in a given month) to funders, policy makers, and the public.
Disclosure of Your Information
While Engine will work to provide the highest level of protection for your information, and unless otherwise specified above, we may disclose personally identifiable information about you to third parties in limited circumstances, including: (1) with your consent; or (2) when we have a good faith belief it is required by law, such as pursuant to a subpoena or other judicial or administrative order.
If we are required by law to disclose the information that you have submitted, we will attempt to provide you with notice (unless we are prohibited) that a request for your information has been made in order to give you an opportunity to object to the disclosure. We will attempt to provide this notice by email, if you have given us an email address, or by postal mail if you have entered a postal address. If you do not challenge the disclosure request, we may be legally required to turn over your information.
Changes to Our Policies
Engine’s Privacy Policy may change from time to time. If so, we will post updates here, as well as in our email newsletter.
